Hasui Kawase (1883-1957)
The Hie Shrine under the snow
Shin-hanga art movement, 1931
Tate-e (vertical orientation)
Oban standard size 35.5 cm x 23.5 cm (14" x 9" 1/4)
With frame 47.2 cm x 34.3 cm (18" 9/16 x 13" 11/16)
Most of Kawase works are landscapes.
Human figures are scarce, they are usually silhouettes often seen from behind, at the edge of the image or in the background.
Their isolation adds a feeling of melancholy that is typical of his style.
