Married to Elisabeth of Bavaria “Sisi"; their only son, Prince Rudolf died by suicide in 1889, in Mayerling.
After the death of Rudolf, the heir to the throne was his nephew Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
In 1914, Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, leading to World War I.
Franz Joseph died in 1916, two years later the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy dissolved
