The first group of painters in Montreal where established in 1911 under the banner of «Les Peintres de la Montée St Michel».
It was a group of 8 without any manifest or declaration; the purpose was simply to meet at the Grand Boisé Saint-Sulpice, near Rivière des Prairies, via Montée St Michel which is today St. Michel Boulevard.
Jean-Paul Pépin joined the Montée St Michel painters in the thirties.
After 20 years of experimentations, Pépin develops his own style called «Catalogue» recognized easily by diagonal brush strokes.
