Theodore’s family moved to Lyon in 1856 where the child went to school, without much conviction, he already had a strong independent character drawn to arts and freedom.
He joined the School of Fine Arts from 1860 to 1862.
He distinguished himself at the annual exhibition organized by the Society of Friends of Arts Palais Saint-Pierre (1863).
In Paris, he was a pupil of Gérôme and Cabanel.
